　在她与曼德尔的婚姻中，她经常参加丈夫的商业会议，令人难以置信地学会了用无线电信号控制武器。但是无线电信号有时会阻塞，海蒂富有远见地认识到，不断地和随意地改变无线电波频率，可以防止信号阻塞的发生，从而防止敌方干扰。

　　当她与曼德尔的婚姻破裂后，她便将这些技术运用到了自己随后的发明中。1940年初，她和作曲家乔治设计出了一个飞机导航系统。乔治构思了一对纸卷，分别安置在飞机和鱼雷里面，来指定变化频率的次序。海蒂和乔治为他们的“频率跳变”装置设计申请了专利，并捐献给了政府。在1942年的8月，他们得到美国的专利，这就是“扩频通讯技术”。可惜当时的美国军方完全不把他们的研究当一回事，拒绝尝试，并为之保密。海蒂在当时未能获得任何荣誉。

　　在上世纪50年代后期，海蒂的这一杰出设计思想，被广泛运用到军队计算机芯片中。从那时起，这一技术也启发了许许多多通信领域的科学家，从而被广泛运用到手机、无线电话和互联网协议的研发上，以使很多人共同使用同一频段的无线电信号。
