Do Not Weep For Me

Do not Stand at My Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

"Do not Stand at My Grave and Weep", a beautiful poem about love and loss, was originally written by Mary Frye, a simple American housewife, on a brown paper shopping bag to console a grieving Jewish girl friend who had learnt the death of her mother way back in Nazi German.

As the time goes by, the deeply moving poem becomes ever more popular. It is read at memorial services, in films, etc. Several songs are composed for the lyrics. The one sung by the singer/songwriter Shaz Oye can be heard at:

There, the image of life and nature, love and loss, in the poem's embedded Spinozian spirit, is beautifully projected.

n 2003, Mary Frye's poem was translated into Japanese, named 千の風になって (化為千風), by the 芥川獎 laureate 新井満. 新井満 also wrote a Japanese song of the same name for the poem.

Based on the poem, 新井満 also wrote a book for the children, where serious questions of life and death are admirably touched upon. The book was translated into Chinese, entitled 化為千風, by 張桂娥 of Taiwan.

In Britain, a reading on the BBC television in 1995 attracted more than 30,000 requests for copies of the poem.
Mary died on September 15, 2004, aged 98. On her tombstone are these words inscribed:
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep . . .
